Commissioner’s Column: Understanding Our Air Quality Action Days

Since late May the smoke from wildfires in eastern Canada has traveled down to the U.S. and caused major problems for our air quality. While New Hampshire was spared some of the more drastic impacts, we did feel the effects. In fact, we initially had to issue two smoke advisories over the span of one week to account for the particle air pollution coming from our northern neighbor.

Gulf of Maine Council Recognizes Three NH Winners

Three New Hampshire award winners, including NHDES Assistant Director of the Water Division Ted Diers, were among the individuals and organizations honored by the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment at an international ceremony hosted by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management in Boston on June 7, 2023. The Gulf of Maine Council presented international awards to honor individuals and organizations that have made a significant difference in protecting the health and sustainability of the Gulf of Maine watershed.

Landscaping for Water Quality Workshop 2023

“This was the best workshop on this topic I have attended to date” was one of the many positive comments from landscapers, students, municipal officials, eco-friendly business owners, clean water organization members and others who gathered in late March at Richardson Park and Whitcomb Hall in Swanzey for the two-day “Landscaping for Water Quality Workshop 2023.” 

Two more projects – Atkinson and Goffstown – receive ARM Fund money

NHDES announced that the Governor and Executive Council approved an Aquatic Resource Mitigation (ARM) Fund project in Atkinson for $180,000 and in Goffstown for $300,000 in recent months.

Shoreland Team Represents at Lakes Congress 2023

Our Shoreland Team attended the Lakes Congress at Church Landing in Meredith on June 2. It was a wonderful day of networking with NH Lakes! Rosemary Aures, Shoreland Specialist with Land Resources Management, delivered a presentation on “Demystifying Shoreland Permitting.” This session educated attendees about the various permits needed for shoreland development, as well as environmental considerations for minimizing impacts on aquatic habitats. Rosemary also provided insight into navigating the permitting process and complying with regulations.

2023 Source Water Protection Grant Round Is Open

The Drinking Water & Groundwater Trust Fund (DWGTF) Source Water Protection Program offers competitive grants to projects that will permanently protect water supply lands. Grants may cover up to 50% of the total project costs to permanently conserve the property, with a maximum grant award of $500,000.
