Celebrate Small Business Week April 30 – May 6, 2023

For more than 50 years, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has celebrated National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. According to data from SBA, 97% of all businesses in New Hampshire are small businesses with under 20 employees, 40% of small businesses are owned by women and 3.8% are owned by a racial minority. To celebrate Small Business Week, consider supporting small businesses by shopping local, sharing on social media, and posting reviews.

NHDES’ Small Business Technical Assistance Program (SBTAP) will celebrate Small Business Week by highlighting the program’s work with businesses across the state and other SBTAP services. The public can follow along on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
SBTAP was established in 1992 to provide small business owners and operators with free assistance to help them understand and comply with air and other environmental regulations. This confidential, non-regulatory program provides information about regulatory requirements and practical, cost-effective technical assistance to encourage compliance with oftentimes complex environmental regulations.

SBTAP meets these goals by providing the following services:

  • Business and Industry Outreach.
  • Environmental Compliance Assistance.
  • On-site Assessment and Consultation Services.

For example, SBTAP provided guidance on groundwater protection and best management practices to Trexler’s Marina in Moultonborough. In April of 1972, Dick and Betty Trexler bought Moultonboro Marine, which was later renamed Trexler’s Marina, in 1978. Over the years, their youngest son, Scott, and his wife, Denise, took over the management of the marina. “Things have changed in the 80+ years when the marina first started, but the family feeling and warm welcome is still there. Owning a small business has its ups and downs, but being on the lake and with family, there is nothing better,” Scott Trexler said.

SBTAP, in partnership with other public and private assistance providers, strives to ensure that businesses are operating in compliance with all applicable air and other environmental requirements and providing a safe workplace for their employees, all while maintaining and increasing their competitive edge.
