Electronics

Date: October 26, 2023

Electronics (e-waste) includes gaming systems, cameras, computer towers, laptops, cell phones, televisions and monitors, electronic office equipment (fax machines, copiers, printers), DVD players, VCRs, stereos, and more. For some, e-waste is anything that plugs into an outlet or uses a battery. Certain electronic items may contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury.

Some electronics are banned from disposal in landfills and incinerators including video display devices (projectors, TVs, and any items with a display screen larger than 4 inches diagonally), central processing units (CPUs) from computers, and non-mobile video display media recorders/players (VCRs and DVD players).

If electronic items are still in usable condition, residents can donate them to charitable organizations, or even schools.

Many local transfer stations will accept electronics for recycling. They will commonly charge a fee that covers a portion of the cost to recycle the item(s). Some Staples and Best Buy retail locations also accept certain electronics and tech equipment for recycling.
