Construction and Demolition Debris (C&D)

Date: October 26, 2023

Construction and demolition debris (C&D) refers to waste generated from the construction, remodeling, repair or demolition of structures and roads. C&D includes:

  • Asphalt, brick, concrete and other masonry materials.
  • Gypsum wallboard.
  • Wood waste (treated/untreated).
  • Tiles/flooring material.
  • Non-asbestos insulation.
  • Siding.
  • Plaster.
  • Roofing shingles.
  • Plumbing, electrical wiring and non-hazardous electrical fixtures.

C&D is usually separated from household trash before disposal. Open burning of trash and construction and demolition debris is prohibited in New Hampshire.

Many transfer stations collect mixed C&D for disposal. Some may sort out clean/untreated wood, asphalt shingles, and plumbing/wiring for recycling at C&D processing facilities or scrap metal facilities.

Check with your local transfer station for available options. Most have a fee structure in place to cover the costs of C&D disposal and recycling. Fees vary by facility and can be based on material type, volume and/or weight.
