Appliances

Date: October 26, 2023

Large appliances, or “white goods,” include:

  • Clothes washers/dryers.
  • Dishwashers.
  • Stoves.
  • Freezers*.
  • Refrigerators*.
  • Air conditioners*.
  • Dehumidifiers*.
  • Microwaves.

Most of these can be recycled as scrap metal.

*Refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and AC units contain refrigerants and, by law, must be drained by a certified technician before being recycled as scrap metal.

Microwaves do not contain refrigerants but may contain a capacitor that should not be included in scrap metal.

If you have an appliance containing refrigerant or a microwave, check with your local transfer station or scrap metal yard for disposal and recycling requirements. If you have curbside pickup, talk with your hauler for disposal options.
