How Cool is That?! –Environmental Education for pre-K – age 99

Minibeasts! They’re everywhere! You may know them by other names – invertebrates or insects. The BBC has a short video for kids to explain invertebrates and where to find them. (Bonus: The British accent is just plain fun, too.)

Invertebrates are an important part of the food chain. Many different animals eat them. They are loaded with protein after all. Birds loooove to eat invertebrates and devour 400 to 500 million tons of insects annually. See a photo collection of birds hunting and eating insects and a video. If you’ve started watching birds at home and are using the Merlin Bird ID app mentioned in last week’s post, see if you can spot the birds while they’re eating! And think about the hungry birds next time you are about to squish an insect in your home – shoo the minibeast outside instead to feed your feathered friends.

(Psst! Did you know you eat insects, too? What? You don’t believe that? Visit ThoughtCo.com (if you dare) to learn about insects in your favorite foods.
