Pollution Prevention Dental Project

In 2000, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) formed a working partnership with the New Hampshire Dental Society (NHDS) and the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center. This partnership continues to promote compliance with environmental laws and regulations by proper management and recycling of mercury-containing wastes and x-ray wastes in dental offices, and encourages the use of non-mercury amalgams.

In order to determine the best method of outreach, a survey was conducted to evaluate the level of awareness and degree of mercury amalgam use, recycling, and disposal among New Hampshire dentists.  A tailored outreach campaign was then implemented to assist the dental community to minimize their waste generation and properly manage their regulated waste streams (mercury, lead, silver). Information provided on these web pages continues to offer pollution prevention strategies and compliance assistance to dental offices.
