Snap the Shore, Face the Future! Enter to Win the New Hampshire King Tide Photo Contest, October 27-30, 2019

Portsmouth, NH – The New Hampshire Coastal Adaptation Workgroup (CAW) is excited to announce the return of the New Hampshire King Tide Photo Contest on October 27-30, 2019, and is calling on community members to help document the effects of higher than normal tides on New Hampshire’s coast.

The term “King Tide” refers to the highest high tides that occur multiple times per year when the moon is in alignment with the sun and closest to the earth. During this year’s photo contest period, the highest tides will occur mid-day and are expected to exceed 10 feet at the Hampton Harbor and Fort Point tide gauges, reaching the “Action” flood stage threshold. These higher than average high tides can cause coastal flooding, especially in low-lying areas, and are harbingers of what will eventually become a “new normal” as sea levels rise due to climate change. Photographing King Tides is an effective way to help communities identify areas prone to coastal flooding, visualize potential impacts of sea-level rise, and start planning for the future.

Participation in the contest is easy and anyone is encouraged to enter by posting up to three photos to Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter using the hashtag #KingTideNH2019 (note that accounts and/or posts must be public in order to be eligible). Those wishing to participate outside of social media may enter by emailing submissions to nhcoastaladaptation@gmail.com. All entries must be photographed along New Hampshire’s tidal shoreline at approximately high tide on October 27-30, 2019. The contest submission period ends at 11:59 PM ET on October 30, 2019. A panel of local judges will select one (1) winning photo in each of the following three Contest Categories: “Most Vulnerable,” “Most Resilient,” and “Best Halloween Theme.” Photos will be judged by the panel based on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and relevance to contest category. In addition to the three winning photos, a “People’s Choice” prize will be awarded to the photo that receives the most votes through the CAW #KingTideNH2019 Photo Contest Survey that will be available for public voting from November 4, 2019 at 12PM ET to November 8, 2019 at 12PM ET. Winners will be announced on November 12, 2019, and will be awarded prizes from generous local donors. An exhibit of select contest photos will be on display at several Seacoast area locations throughout 2019-2020.
