Green Algae Bloom on Locke Lake in Barnstead, New Hampshire

Concord, NH - The bloom on Locke Lake in Barnstead, NH contained green algae and very few colonies of cyanobacteria were observed. There is no cyanobacteria advisory for this waterbody at this time. However, NHDES recommends avoiding contact with any surface accumulations that appear green or scummy.

A green algae bloom has been observed along the shorelines and coves of Locke Lake in Barnstead, NH. The bloom appeared as bright green surface scums, similar to that of cyanobacteria. While the bloom contained mostly green algae, few colonies of cyanobacteria were also found mixed in with this bloom. The levels of cyanobacteria were not elevated enough to issue an advisory, however it is recommended to avoid contact with water in areas experiencing the bloom.
