Experts to Present Ice Jam Observer Training in the North Country

CONCORD, NH - The New Hampshire Geological Survey (NHGS) at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, in collaboration with the New Hampshire Silver Jackets,  and in coordination with the towns of Franconia, Conway, Lancaster and Plymouth, will host three training sessions in early November focusing on ice jams. Several North Country towns have experienced ice-jam induced flooding in recent years.

This training, to be provided by river and ice jam experts from NHGS, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Cold Regions Research Engineering Laboratory and the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, will focus on the science of ice jams, including how they form, signs of concern, and how to deal with them. The effort is an outgrowth of a multi-agency Silver Jackets project that also recently examined sections of the Gale River in Franconia and Sugar Hill to identify potential jam formation mechanisms.

Silver Jackets is a USACE initiative to foster a multi-agency partnership in each state to address flood risk concerns. NHGS chairs this group for New Hampshire, which also includes, as key state partners, the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the Office of Strategic Initiatives, the Department of Transportation, and New Hampshire Fish & Game.
