Session 1: “Pressure Surges Methods to Control Them”
This session explains in layman’s terms how pressure surges are created and propagate through the system and discusses various methods to protect systems from excessive surge pressure during normal and emergency pumping operations.  The pros and cons of Variable Frequency Drives, pump control valves, surge tanks/vessels and surge relief valves for wastewater applications are discussed.

Session 2: “Check Valve Slam and Automatic Air Valves”
This session is in two parts.  The first part explains why check valves slam (hammer) and how to prevent it.  The differences between air-cushioned, oil-cushioned and controlled closing check valves are discussed.  The second part discusses the various types of automatic air valves, how they function, where they should be located and the special needs of wastewater systems.
