  Volunteer Lake Assessment Program

   Educational Resources

Education is an important part of the Volunteer Lake Assessment Program.  Not only is it important to collect water quality data, it is also important to ensure that the public is aware of the value of New Hampshire's lakes.  DES accomplishes this task in several manners.

  • Biologists are often asked to attend lake association meetings to discuss water quality issues, such as cultural eutrophication*, non-point pollution*, watershed management*, lake protection issues, and invasive species.
  • DES biologists are also invited to schools for lake ecology presentations (often associated with the Interactive Lake Ecology program; see below) and career day events.
  • DES also offers a program for students, the Interactive Lake Ecology Program.  This is a curriculum that was created in 1992 by DES limnologists and an area school teacher to teach middle school students about lake ecology.
