Volunteer Opportunities for Classes
& Individuals
Volunteer Lake Assessment Program (VLAP) and Volunteer
River Assessment Program (VRAP)
These two volunteer programs are dedicated to educating
teachers and citizen volunteers on water quality issues and providing support
to groups undertaking water quality monitoring of New Hampshire’s lakes
and rivers. Both programs offer 1) educational materials and lectures to
schools, 2) training of teachers and students in designing and conducting
water quality sampling programs, and 3) sampling equipment for loan. For
further information, contact Andrea LaMoreaux (VLAP) at 271-2658 or
Jen Drociak (VRAP) at 271-0699.
Weed Watchers
An exotic aquatic plant detection program
that relies on volunteers to assist in the early detection of these weeds in New Hampshire
lakes and ponds. Volunteers are given special "Weed Watcher Kits" that
include photographs, drawings, and descriptions of exotic plants as well
as instructions on how to survey a lake. Any school located near a lake
or pond that would like to become a volunteer should contact 271-2248.
NH Marsh Monitors
Marsh Monitors uses volunteers to help monitor the physical and biological condition of New Hampshire's salt marshes on the seacoast and Great Bay. Aided by several project partners, researchers and scientists, volunteers learn to employ the same techniques as professionals with pre- and post-restoration monitoring and become directly involved in current wetland research and restoration. For more information about the program, please see Marsh Monitors at http://www.des.nh.gov/coastal/Restoration/ salt_marsh_monitoring.htm. No experience is necessary. To volunteer, please call (603) 559-1500.
