New Hampshire has lost many continuous record stream gages since 1969. By 2007 the stream gage network will be at its lowest numbers since 1939. Alarmed at the drastic loss of 14 stream gages in 2004-2005, which resulted from impermanent funding sources, the Rivers Management Advisory Committee determined the need for a strategy to implement and fund a long-term, multi-purpose Stream Gage Network within the state. In response, during the spring and summer of 2006, the DES Commissioner convened a Stream Gage Task Force (SGTF) comprised of gage data users representing many interests. The SGTF reviewed the uses of the data collected by the existing NH gage network. The SGTF also identified data needs that were not being met and proposed additional gages to fill those voids. The SGTF reported its findings in its report dated September 15, 2006.
