Volunteer Mercury in Fish Sampling Program

Another important way to protect yourself from harmful mercury consumption is to get involved in the volunteer Mercury in Fish Sampling Program. Due to the limited number of staff biologists and the many lakes in the state, it is impossible to obtain data for all the lakes in New Hampshire without the help of volunteers.

At present there have been 1,561 analyses of freshwater fish: 1,214 from lakes and reservoirs and 301 from rivers and impoundments. Total mercury levels ranged from 0.01 to 2.49 parts per million (ppm) for the 25 fish species sampled, which include 628 yellow perch, 217 largemouth bass, 178 smallmouth bass, and 149 Eastern chain pickerel.
