Checklist for Pollution Prevention A comprehensive checklist
of P2 methods to implement in businesses.
An environmental management system (EMS) is a comprehensive, organized
and documented system for an organization to holistically manage its activities
that affect the environment. The EMS most commonly followed in the United States
is described in the international standard ISO 14001.
Waste reduction at the office consists of little changes whose
cumulative effect can make a big difference. With a little thought, you can
apply pollution prevention strategies to any "process" that generates waste,
whether it's making a cup of coffee or writing a memo to your co-workers.
Universal Wastes are a special group of hazardous wastes that are
generated by all segments of the population and, unfortunately, often improperly
disposed by the people who generate them. In an effort to make it easier and
more cost effective to properly manage these wastes, the "Universal Waste Rules"
exempts the wastes from the more burdensome Hazardous Waste Rules requirements,
as long as they are managed to prevent release to the environment and properly
recycled or disposed.
