Upcoming Workshop Focuses on Greener Ski Resorts
“Green Slopes” Workshop Highlights Tank Compliance and Green Teams
Concord, NH – On July 23, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and Ski NH will hold the 3rd Annual Green Slopes Workshop at Ragged Mountain Resort in Danbury. The workshop, entitled “Tanks and Teams,” will focus on tank registration and compliance as well as implementing a green team at ski facilities. Agenda topics include an overview of above and underground storage tank regulations and rules, Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans, how to implement an effective green team and case studies from various ski facilities that have enhanced their standard operating procedures and improved their environmental programs.
While the New England ski industry is important to the region’s economy, it also has a significant impact on the environment. The ski industry’s basic necessity is snow – lots of snow, and grooming snow takes fuel – lots of fuel. In order to create an economically and environmentally sustainable ski area, the snow must be groomed with a myriad of machines and ski lifts run on generators. This equipment uses oils and fluids stored either in permanent tanks or containers that are regulated by the DES as well as the EPA. It is essential for ski facilities to operate in compliance if they are to remain a sustainable, profitable industry.
Owners and operators of ski facilities from New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont are invited to come together increase the efficiency of their operations and reduce their impact on the environment. In addition to presentations by industry and environmental experts, vendors with innovative technology and operations techniques will be available to talk with all attendees about their products.
