Public Water Systems that Add Fluoride
The public water systems listed below add fluoride to their water supply. The purpose is to reduce the incidences of tooth decay in younger users. The target dosage, as recommended by the US Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control, is 1.1 part per million (ppm) which also can be expressed as 1.1 milligram per liter (mg/L).
Fluoride occurs naturally in bedrock (drilled/artesian) wells in New Hampshire. In southern New Hampshire, the occurrence of elevated fluoride is irregular. In the northern portions, fluoride is much more common, particularly in wells in the Mt. Washington Valley. Public water systems with elevated naturally occurring fluoride are listed fact sheet WD-WSEB-5-2 entitled "Small Public Water Systems in New Hampshire with Naturally Occurring Fluoride."
