List of Approved Backflow Prevention Devices

New Hampshire Code of Administrative Rules, Env-Ws 364, requires that public water utilities take appropriate actions to prevent the reverse flow of water previously delivered to customers. There are many elements of such a program as identified in fact sheet WD-DWGB-11-1 “Cross-Connection Control Programs.”

A common component of such a program is the installation of plumbing devices to prevent such backflow. Where backflow prevention devices are used, the device must be “approved” by the Department of Environmental Services Water Division. New Hampshire does not have a separate approval process for such devices but cross references the list of “Approved Backflow Prevention Assemblies” for “testable” devices as published by:

Foundation for Cross-Connection Control and Hydraulic Research
University of Southern California
Kaprielian Hall 200
Los Angeles, CA 90089-2531
(213) 740-2032, Fax (213) 740-8399
fccchr@usc.edu

For backflow preventions devices such as residential dual checks valves or other “non testables” devices, DES requires that the device meet or exceed ANSI/ASSE standard 1024 “Dual Check Valve Type Backflow Preventers.” The International Plumbing Code shall also be consulted for further information.

A copy of the latest edition of this list of acceptable backflow prevention devices can be obtained from the Institute. Manufacturers of such devices typically identify on their packaging and in sales brochures, which products have this approval.
