Drinking Water Source Protection Program

New Community Well Sitings

Community water systems that plan to bring new wells on line must first obtain approval from the Department of Environmental Services.  DES has adopted rules that specify the site selection criteria and the procedures to be followed.  The purpose of the rules is to help ensure that water of acceptable quality and adequate quantity will be provided. Community water systems and their contractors need to be familiar with these procedures in order to avoid potentially expensive mistakes, such as siting a new well near a known source of contamination or performing the wrong type of pumping test.

For more information about the requirements, refer to the rules and publications listed below, or contact the staff of the New Community Well Siting Program.

Rules
* Env-Dw 301 Site Selection of Small Production Wells for Community Water Systems
* Env-Dw 302 Site Selection of Large Production Wells for Community Water Systems

Note: Certain projects may fall under the jurisdiction of additional rules such as those for Large Groundwater Withdrawals, New Sources of Bottled Water, etc. Please contact the Program Staff listed below to discuss your specific project.
