Operates and manages the New Hampshire State Park System, which contains 43 state
parks, 12 historic sites, 14 natural areas, 39 islands, and 4 state fishing piers and
marinas. Through its Office of Community Recreation, it provides a wide variety of
professional services to promote the benefits of outdoor recreation for residents and
visitors. From pier management to trail system planning, from mountain top accessibility
to park safety, specialists are available to help with trails, parks and recreation
concerns.

Maintains and conducts an on-going biological inventory of rare and sensitive plant and
animal species and natural communities in New Hampshire. Provides data and scientific
expertise to inform conservation and development decision making. Manages information
through an integrated data management system consisting of a computerized database,
comprehensive map files, and structured manual files, which is collectively referred to as
the Biological and Conservation Data System (BCD). Can provide data on the location,
condition, and conservation and legal status of tracked species and communities.

Ensures that all shellfish harvested from New Hampshire coastal waters are safe for
consumption. Worked in cooperation with other state agencies and UNH Jackson Estuarine Lab
to re-open Hampton Harbor clam flats on a conditional basis and a section of Little Bay
clam flats.

Promotes the conservation and use of the state's natural resources. Activities include
fish and game management; enforcement of conservation laws; development of boating/public
access projects; education on nongame species; and dissemination of information through
newsletters, press releases, brochures, programs, and coordination of various public
events. Marine Fisheries Division regulates and promotes recreational and commercial
marine fishing, and responds to and evaluates effects of oil spills. Promotes the
conservation of marine resources and their habitats to ensure their continued existence.

Prepares for, and carries out, all emergency response and training functions. Works to
prevent, minimize and repair injury or damage resulting from widespread or severe damage,
injury or loss of life or property resulting from any natural or man-made cause
(including, fire, flood, earthquake, windstorm, wave actions, technological incidents, oil
or chemical spills, or water contamination). Responsible for command and control of the
State's emergency response that involves: 1) activation of emergency response facilities;
2) direction and coordination of operations as the emergency develops; 3) recommendation
and implementation of protective measures; 4) coordination of local, state, regional, and
federal assistance; 5) media support. The office is divided into five sections:
Management, Business Administration; Technological Hazards; Program Management &
Training, and Operations.

Part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Estuary Program, a joint
local/state/federal program established under the Federal Clean water Act with the goal of
promoting the protection and enhancement of nationally significant estuarine resources.
Aims to safeguard the environmental quality of New Hampshire's estuaries by focusing on
the identification, abatement and prevention of non-point pollution in the watersheds of
New Hampshire's estuaries. Designing water quality improvement strategies that utilize the
state's shellfish resources as an indicator of water quality and as a measure of overall
estuarine health. Encouraging land use practices that minimize the impacts from
development and protect significant habitats and species. Restoring degraded
esturine and upland habitats.
